Australian drone RID Remote Identification

Remote Identification is a technology incorporated into drones to provide information about where they are flying and who is flying them.

Due to the increasing use of drones in Australia and around the world, there is a need for effective tools to monitor their activity. Identification technology will help hold drone operators accountable and support the safe integration of drones in Australian airspace.

Remote Identification

Remote Identification (Remote ID or RID) is a technology incorporated into drones that, when used with suitable ground equipment, can provide information about who is operating a drone and where they’re flying, enabling accountability for their actions.

Better information about where drones are operating will be fundamental to the safe and efficient operation of drones and will support future drone traffic management systems. This will help the integration of emerging technologies with traditional aircraft systems as well as supporting safe, economic, and efficient management for the future of Australian airspace.

2023 Discussion Paper

A discussion paper was circulated for public consultation in July 2023. The paper was a first step towards a potential mandate for drones to carry Remote ID, and in which circumstances. The paper:

• identifies opportunities and risks associated with this technology
• outlines options for how Remote ID could be mandated in Australia
• seeks feedback to inform detailed options for enabling legislation and/or regulation.

The consultation process was a starting point for ongoing discussion and collaboration between government, industry, and the broader community to ensure that deployment of Remote ID in Australia is fit-for-purpose and meets our needs.

Next steps

The Aviation White Paper committed to undertake a Policy Impact Analysis for a future Remote ID mandate in Australia.

Engagement with government, industry and the broader community is ongoing to understand if and how a Remote Identification system could be deployed. Multiple options will be considered through further consultation with the community.
